The Rwenzori Mountains and Mount Elgon....
An adventure on the Rwenzori is very demanding and yet very satisfying. Even an experienced climber will find it very challenging because of its un-engineered, steep and slippery trails due to frequent rain fall. once you get to the top, there is alot to marvel about apart from just climbing.
The most interesting features on the Rwenzori is the vegetation, with the lower slopes covered in dense forest vegetation. The weather is another important feature, with constant rainfall and cold temperatures being the order of the day. So, a raingear, sleeping bag, warm Hat, gloves, heavy socks and gum boots are a must for this exciting climb.
The Rwenzori is a typical mountain range covering a wide area with six main massifs, each having several peaks with glaciers and permanent snow. The Rwenzori Mountains popularly referred to as “Mountains of the Moon” are permanently snow-capped peaks that offer great trekking experiences for Mountain climbers. The Rwenzori Mountains lie along the western border of Uganda and rise to a height of 5,100 metres.
Rwenzori is the highest mountain range in Africa with the highest peaks; Margherita (5,109m) and Alexandra (5083m) on Mount Stanley. These are exceeded in altitude elsewhere in Africa only by Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya which are extinct volcanoes standing in isolation above the surrounding plains.
