Tomaz Safaris

let your African dream come true...

Hiking

The Rwenzori is a typical mountain range covering a wide area with six main massifs, each having several peaks with glaciers and permanent snow. The highest point of Rwenzori is the Margherita peak at an altitude of 5109 meters (16763ft). This also happens to be the third highest point in Africa. Hiking the Rwenzori is very demanding and yet very satisfying. Even an experienced hiker will find it very challenging because of its un-engineered, steep and slippery trails due to frequent rain fall. The most interesting features on the Rwenzori is the vegetation, with the lower slopes covered in dense forest vegetation giving way to open zones with the giant lobelias and groundsels bigger than those found on other African mountains.
The weather is another important feature, with constant rainfall and cold temperatures being the order of the day. Therefore, raingear, sleeping bag, warm Hat, gloves, heavy socks and gum boots are a must for this exciting hike.

At the top of the mountain is a large crater of over 40 kms. On the slopes of the mountain is a rich variety of altitudinal vegetation from montane forest to open moorland studded with the giant lobelia and groundsel plants. Mt. Elgon is an excellent destination for trekking with no technical climbing equipment required. With its spectacular scenery of waterfalls, caves, hot springs, you can't miss out on this memorable Safari.
